Don’t be beguiled by the food serpent

It is good to see friends and classmates during the holidays or during reunions, especially if you haven’t seen then in 20 years.

It is good to see friends and classmates during the holidays or during reunions, especially if you haven’t seen then in 20 years. But here’s the shocker: Your old friends may look entirely different than they did 20 years ago, which makes you wonder what happened. Did life throw them a curve? Did they take care of themselves and treat their body right? I can answer the latter. If they gained too much weight, they didn’t take care of themselves. More than likely they gorged on the wrong food.

I was happy to see old classmates and friends nevertheless, but I was saddened by what I’d observed. The physical condition of some of my classmates was appalling. But then when I overheard some of them talking about surviving a stroke and heart attack, how they’d gained too much weight, or how they’re grappling with diabetes and others health issues, I was overwhelmed with compassion. Sure, illnesses will come, but the serious ones can be prevented if we choose to eat healthy.

I wasn’t the least bit surprised when a couple of my friends tried to convince me that their weight problem is a result of poor genetics. That is just hogwash. I totally disagree. Some families can point to a history of diabetes, however, but is it genetics? If so, then everybody should suffer from diabetes. I bet, though, that no one thought about his or her choice of food. If you’re eating unhealthy, then expect any number of diseases to ravage your body.

Eating unhealthy is like going on a trip without a road map. You can’t expect to arrive at your right destination in life if you’re continually making the wrong turns. There are signs that will warn us when we’re eating unhealthy and about to lapse into ill health. Eating the right food, however, will lead to good health. You’ll know when to start the journey if what you see in the mirror is rotund and unattractive.

Eating unhealthy is a way of life for most of us. The consequences can be dire. Popping pills isn’t the answer, though. I’ve seen how people behave at the pharmacy when they can’t get the kinds of drugs they want. It’s madness; it’s heartbreaking. Follow the doctors’ orders regarding the pharmacy, but you wouldn’t have to go to the doctors if you change your diet for the best.

Our children are the future, but who’s going to steer them down the right path to good health? It is our responsibility as parents. We harp upon them to get a good education, but rarely do we admonish them when they’re eating chips, candy – or any food that is devoid of nutrients – and drinking sugary drinks. Can a shot or a pill solve everyone’s health problem? I don’t think so. Children, however, will do what they see their parents, or guardians, do. We’re all creatures of habit, you know.

I may be a bit presumptuous, but there aren’t enough physical activities in our schools. And salad bars, please! Children should be taught the benefits of exercising, not just something that sports figures do. Eating a good nutritional meal, though, is the key to keeping them just as healthy as the athletes they adore. If we’re not careful, our children will follow the same meandering road map that we’re following.

It doesn’t take much to prepare a good nutritious meal. We’re all used to fast food, but it’s not healthy. Don’t be so much of a hurry and consume food that will destroy your body and force you to live on medication. No one wants to cook, but you’ll have to if you want to live a healthy life.

The choice is yours. You can prevent heart disease, diabetes and cancer by changing your lifestyle. Don’t be persuaded by TV commercials that pitch fast food. I know food advertisements sometimes look delectable, scrumptious and tempting, but you have to fight the powerful lure. A Bible scenario would be good here: Don’t be beguiled by the food serpent. You’ll surely die.

I know the economy is bad, but you should want to stay healthy at all costs. Why? Your life depends on it.
