Is it hating – or something else going on?

Dear Lucy: Sometimes I turn on the TV and I see these successful, rich, beautiful people and get so full of jealousy that I have to turn off the TV. I mean, I can’t stand Oprah and I don’t even know her!

Sometimes we find ourselves responding in ways that we don’t like even for ourselves. We aren’t sure why we do it, but we somehow know that because it doesn’t feel right, it probably is not right.

Here is an example!

Dear Lucy: Sometimes I turn on the TV and I see these successful, rich, beautiful people and get so full of jealousy that I have to turn off the TV. I mean, I can’t stand Oprah and I don’t even know her! Lately, when I look at all that they have and all that I don’t have it just makes me sick. This doesn’t feel right and I need to stop it but I don’t know how.

Dear Reader: WOW! How courageous of you to put in writing what some others may also be thinking. First of all, it’s funny how we never make the connection between the reporting of celebrities’ faults and problems as a cue that all that glitters may not be gold! They are still human and, just like us, subject to problems and growing pains that no amount of money or privilege can protect them from.

Secondly, when we watch TV, listen to the radio and read the papers, we are constantly bombarded with visions of seeming inequity, “things,” “toys,” and suggestions about what we should long for and hopefully go out and buy! We are persuaded to be mega-consumers from every possible angle. Remember that TV, radio and newsprint are possible because of ads and commercials.

The belief in lack and limitation makes us either go out and get more stuff or hoard and cling to what we have. When we think there is not enough we operate from a place of fear. And fear always takes us into the negative emotions of hatred, jealousy, envy, resentment, etc.

This awareness on your part is an inner call for you to start thinking for yourself.  Make a decision that you will not be afraid. You won’t be afraid that somehow God messed up and didn’t create enough. You will no longer be afraid that if Oprah eats today it means that you might not get to eat because she got all of the food. See how weird that is?

Today, begin to say: “there is enough, period.” “I am enough and I have enough.” It may seem like a lie to you at first, but stick with it for 30 days if you can and something miraculous will begin to happen!

There is enough, I am enough and I have enough, period!
