Medical alert: ‘I am 46 years old and weigh 650 lbs.’

I got a phone call the other day from a woman who wanted to talk about food preparation. The woman sounded desperate – a distress call, if you will. I agreed to come to her home to chat further and lay out a plan.

I got a phone call the other day from a woman who wanted to talk about food preparation. The woman sounded desperate – a distress call, if you will. I agreed to come to her home to chat further and lay out a plan for her to prepare simple, healthy meals.  

After I stepped across the threshold into the woman’s home, I was escorted to the bedroom where I noticed the morbidly obese woman seated with two oxygen tanks and a mound of medicine bottles in close proximity. I was shocked at what my eyes beheld and literally knocked off my feet by what she told me: “I am 46 years old and weigh 650 lbs.”

I could have cried. But then I knew I had to do something after she said, “I’m just ready to give this life up. I’m tired of being trapped in a body that seems to get larger by the day.” So I asked her if she loved herself. She indicated she didn’t.

With tears streaming down her cheeks, she continued, “Look at me. I can’t even walk into my own living room and my bedroom. These four walls are my prison. I don’t remember the last time I went into my living room or just walked down the street, or felt the bright sunlight on my face.”

I could feel the woman’s pain; I once was trapped in an obese body. But I freed myself and escaped imminent death. I’d gone as far as I could and decided to live life to the fullest. This woman has reached a breaking point and decided she can’t go farther. So I decided I would help her lose the weight and restore her life.

Before starting the woman out on a regimen of healthy food choices, I asked her to consult with her doctor(s) to see if they would monitor her while she is on this new diet regimen and if there was anything that I should be aware of, such as food allergies or medications that could pose a health risk if she’s restricted to a diet of vegetables and juicing.

The fun is just beginning. Or should I say, the work is just beginning. Now this woman, who has so much to live for, has to put as much effort into eating wholesome and healthy food as she did when she literally was eating herself to death.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 3 three Americans is obese, causing roughly 300,000 deaths each year. That number is increasing daily. I’ve seen for myself the number of people flocking to fast food restaurants to purchase food high in sodium, sugar and cholesterol. The food may taste good, but it’s unhealthy.

That brings to mind the obese woman I went to see. Was she a glutton for fast food? I wonder how many others are just like her looking to free their body of excessive weight. The thought of being trapped in a room with no open window is incomprehensible. Try to imagine the power going off for a day.

For this young lady, the decision was made to change her lifestyle, including the lifestyle of everyone else in the household. Here’s why: There is another person in the home who is 25 and weighs 345 lbs. And, believe it or not, there is a child who is between 11 and 14 weighing 175 lbs. They need help too.

If the woman of the house is serious about dropping the pounds, so should the others. It has to be a joint effort. The 25 year old and the child are obese because the woman has inadvertently led them to the trough of unhealthy food choices. So it goes without saying that if the woman sets a good example for eating healthy, they will follow.

The pounds will shed if the family chooses to eat plant-based food instead of processed food. Exercise is a must too. According to a study in Healthy Living, a magazine devoted to wellness, healthy and unhealthy eating habits can be contagious. However, we must get our BMI (body mass index) numbers in control to combat obesity.

The journey has begun for this young lady and her family. I’ll keep you updated on their progress.
