The wife of the MCS superintendent was herself an educator, having been a longtime art teacher. She and Dr. Cash had three sons – Kofi, Jade, and Asil. Her support for her husband was upfront and of longstanding, 34 years.

In a 2004 interview, Dr. Cash, then-superintendent of Vineyard Schools in Martha’s Vineyard in Maryland, spoke of the offer of a newly formed position, Chief of Accountability and System-wide Performance in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools in Florida.

“I hesitated because of my devotion to the Island,” Cash said. “But she told me, ‘Don’t hesitate.’ She has been my support and encouragement all through the years. I was clearly ambivalent, had a lot of mixed feelings. Lisa has always supported me in my decision to change jobs in what seemed to be a step up the career ladder.”

The Cash family left Martha’s Vineyard after nine years and moved to Dade County. Dr. Cash served in the Florida post until his last move to his Memphis post in 2008.

“The entire MCS family and Memphis community is saddened by the passing of Mrs. Lisa Cash,” said MCS President Martavius Jones, in a released statement.

“During this time of loss, we appreciate the prayers and condolences expressed by the community and ask for your continued understanding of the request for privacy for the Cash family.”

Funeral arrangements are incomplete, and no details of any local or out-of-town services were readily available.

Day-to-day operations of MCS will be conducted by Dr. Irving Hamer, Deputy Superintendent of Academic, Operations, Technology and Innovation.
