According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 1.1 million people – half of them African Americans – are living with HIV/AIDS nationwide. One in six do not know they are HIV/AIDS positive.

Disproportionately affected by HIV relative to their share of the U.S. population, African Americans account for 44 percent of all new infections in the U.S. while representing just 12 percent of the population. According to a national survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation, three in five African Americans now know someone living with HIV or who has died of AIDS.

Early diagnosis and treatment can improve health, extend life and help to prevent the spread of the disease. In fact, people with HIV who take prescribed medication regularly reduce the risk of transmitting the virus by as much as 96 percent.
