Prayers and well wishes started flowing from multiple quarters Wednesday morning after word came that Tameka “Big Baby” Goodman – known by many as “Our Lady of Soul” was “fighting for her life.”

Lakethen Mason, Goodman’s business manager, posted this wrenching message on Facebook.

“Our Lady of Soul Tameka 'Big Baby' Goodman has suffered a massive heart attack and is fighting for her life at this time. Please pray with us that Ms Goodman pulls through this most difficult event.”

Born and raised in Shreveport, La., Goodman’s powerful voice has become a point of reference for many who love the smooth delivery of R&B and soul.

An element of Goodman’s Facebook page speaks to this truth: she brings to mind artists such as Jill Scott, Angie Stone, Betty Wright and Chaka Khan.

She offers this self-assessment:

“It is great to be compared to great artist but people create categories. All of those artists are totally different and they all have made amazing contributions to the music industry. I just hope to make my impact on soul music just as they have.”

Goodman was being treated at Baptist Hospital East.
