Raised in Chicago, Dr. Miller proudly considers himself a product of the Memphis city school system after moving to the area while in middle school. He graduated from the University of Memphis with a doctoral degree in higher and adult education, earned a master’s degree in criminal justice and education policy, and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. He also has been involved in various community initiatives focused on gang intervention, juvenile offender mentoring, and youth development.
Dr. Miller’s area of interest varies, including crime prevention, criminal investigation, crime statistics, leadership, and organizational behavior. His background includes county law enforcement, narcotics investigations, commerce investigations, school security planning, and corrections.
Dr. Miller believes that crime can be prevented through education. For two years he created and directed an inner city program focused on middle school students. The program served more than 60 students over the course of each summer and concentrated on cultural awareness, academic enrichment, mentoring, and crime prevention.
He also believes that leaders should facilitate the efforts of those being led in order to assist them in accomplishing their goals and objectives. As a professor of criminal justice and campus dean, his objective is to provide students with focused professional educational services and career advising, as these two relate to the students’ personal and professional goals.
