I-85 Reopened After Woman Hit and Killed By Car

Lanes on the northbound side of I-85 have reopened this morning after a 23-year-old woman, who police say was intoxicated, was hit and killed by a car on the interstate. The woman has not yet been identified by authorities.

The accident happened at around 4:30 a.m. on I-85 northbound just north of Ga. 316 in Gwinnett County. Police say the woman got out of the car after arguing with the driver and began walking. She was hit not long after.

"Apparently, she was having some sort of altercation with the driver, which caused the driver to pull over," Gwinnett police Sgt. Wes Barnhart said.

The driver called police, apparently before the accident happened, to report a "road hazard."

"Before we could get here, the drunk passenger who was walking up the interstate was struck by another vehicle coming off the exit ramp," Barnhardt told the AJC. "She made it about 300 feet up the road before she was hit."

"The deceased, who was intoxicated, got out and began to walk up I-85 northbound," Barnhart told the AJC.

Two lanes of I-85 northbound were shut down until around 7 a.m. and both lanes are now moving.
