Regulations for Cemetery Oversight Act are adopted

CHICAGO (AP) — New state rules on the operation of cemeteries in Illinois have been put into place.

In a news release, the state's Department of Financial and Professional Regulation says it has adopted regulations needed to implement the last piece of the Cemetery Oversight Act.

Under the new rules, all cemeteries must obtain a license to operate a cemetery in Illinois or they must register as being at least partially exempt from the act.

Gov. Pat Quinn signed the Cemetery Oversight Act in January 2010, which creates a regulatory structure for the Illinois funeral and cemetery industries and provides oversight and regulation.

The law came after former workers allegedly dug up graves in a scheme to resell burial plots at Burr Oak Cemetery in the Chicago suburb of Alsip.
