Couple’s 53-year-old marriage finally gets a wedding ceremony


Aubrey Johnson, 17, and Luerunia Davis, 14, met while chopping cotton in the fields in Benjestown, Tenn. in 1957. They fell in love and were married on March 29, 1958.

Aubrey Johnson, 17, and Luerunia Davis, 14, met while chopping cotton in the fields in Benjestown, Tenn. in 1957. They fell in love and were married on March 29, 1958.

The two exchanged their vows before a justice of the peace in a department store in Hernando, Miss. A family friend drove them there in a 1955 Mercury Monclair. They passed Elvis’ Presley’s Graceland, amazed at the landscape and beauty of the home.

On Friday, April 1, Aubrey and Luerunia Johnson renewed the marriage vows. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Eric Jackson. The celebration took place at Anthony’s Classic Hall at 2828 Stage Center in Bartlett and was hosted by the couple’s four children – Shirley, Audrey, Marvin and Milton.

With more than 60 friends and family members present and sharing words of reflections of the couples courtship and family life, Luerunia Johnson said, “This is great, much more than I imagined. We never had a wedding and I am glad to see everyone here celebrating our 53rd anniversary with us”
