Never too busy to give back

 Myron Mays

I usually keep a full calendar of things to do, but I’m never too busy to reach out and give back.

This Saturday, March 12th, I will be the Master of Ceremony for the “Annual STEP UP 4 CHILDREN: Step Show Competition” at the historic Lemoyne-Owen College Gymnasium at 807 Walker Avenue at 1 p.m. “STEP UP 4 CHILDREN” is a campaign to promote the importance of mentoring and community involvement to ensure that all children are given a fair chance in life. I’m pretty sure you can look back on your life and almost directly pinpoint one person for making you who you are today. I can.

Here’s the amazing part: I didn’t run into that person until I was 20 years of age. However, he is directly responsible for all of the great things I have been able to do for the past nearly 18 years. How did he do that you might ask?

Well, the guy gave me my first job in radio, which has been the foundation for all of my accomplishments ever since. That opportunity CHANGED my life. Without it, I literally would not know what would be happening with Myron today. His name is Roger Bethel by the way.

So if you’re free this Saturday at 1 p.m., stop by and show your support. Who knows, you just might get the opportunity to change a life yourself.

Events planned for the day include music, giveaways and more. This is no ordinary step show competition!  Competitors will be the “best of the best” step teams in Memphis City and Shelby County Schools.  There will be three divisions in which awards and prizes will be given accordingly: Elementary, Middle, and High School.  An additional award will be given for the school with the Most Spirit and Support.

The 90’s Reloaded Hip Hop Show

Didn’t you just love the 90’s? It was the decade of loud colors and some of the greatest Hip Hop music ever recorded. Not to mention some of the greatest haircuts ever known to man.

Well, here’s a chance to relive some of those memories with The 90’s Reloaded Hip Hop Show and Afterparty. There will be a full slate of performers paying tribute to what we know as the “Golden Age” of Hip Hop. The 90’s Reloaded is hosted by the Immortal Hardface and happens March 18 at 9 p.m. at the Young Avenue Deli located at 2119 Young Avenue in the Cooper Young District. There is a $5 cover charge and you must be 18 to enter and 21 to drink.

You’ve seen him on “Def Comedy Jam,” BET’s “Comic View,” & TV One’s “Who GOT Jokes” and now, thanks to MajestiK Entertainment and the V-Mack House of Comedy, Tyler Craig will be bringing the jokes to M.
