She did it – and well!
Valerie June made her network television debut as a solo act on "The Late Show with David Letterman" on Wednesday (Aug. 21). She nailed "Workin' Woman Blues" from her breakthrough album – "Pushin' Against A Stone."
After the set up by Letterman – "...And I think she used to be married to Johnnie Cash," Letterman said, joking with his sidekick. – the former Memphis singer-songwriter flashed her signature smile and let it rip.
Born in Humboldt, Tenn., June has dropped anchor in New York City. She will never drop Memphis.
In 2010, as she turned to Kickstarter to help fund an album project, June shared this thought with The New Tri-State Defender:
"Without Memphis, I would not be where I am now. I represent Memphis in my music. ...I became an adult in Memphis."
