The grill was smoking. The music was pumping. The kids were playing. The New Tri-State Defender's Let's Move Memphis Summer Health Fair and Family Fun Day was off to a terrific start.
This year's event returned to the Orange Mound Community Center, and the citizens of Orange Mound were glad about it.
Co-hosted by State Rep. G.A. Hardaway, the event also drew other politicians and concerned community activists. Congressman Steve Cohen was on hand to help pass out hot dogs, hamburgers and cold sodas to the community. Event sponsor Methodist HealthCare provided free health screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose testing for the very grateful attendees.
"This is truly a blessing to have you all come back to the community and provide health checks for us," said Orange Mound resident Bertha Simmons. "Because some of us can't get to the doctor's and stuff like we need to."
Simmons' sentiment was shared among many of the area's residents.
With the "Let's Move Memphis" theme in mind, fitness guru LaKisha Morgan conducted aerobics and dancing as an exercise alternative and demonstrated many ways for Memphis to move, get fit, and be healthy!
