Bishop McKenzie to keynote Providence A.M.E. banquet

Providence AME Church will hold its Anniversary Banquet with Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie of the 13th Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal church, as the keynote speaker Providence African Methodist Episcopal Church will hold its Anniversary Banquet with Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie, the presiding prelate of the 13th Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal church, as the keynote speaker on June 25 at 5 p.m.

The banquet will be in the Victory Banquet Hall of New Salem M.B. Church at 2237 S. Parkway East.

The occasion will mark the 135th anniversary of the church. Incorporated into the theme is this phrase: “continuing our legacy by faith and God’s Grace.”

Bishop McKenzie is the first female to serve as bishop in any predominantly African-American Methodist denomination. Ebony Magazine honored her as one of the 15 greatest African-American female preachers. She has written four books, including “Journey to the Well,” and is the national chaplain of Delta Sigma Theta. Featured performers include Ernestine Hunt Dillard, former Memphian and renowned soprano recording artist, Wendy O and Le Chorale.

The evening will include a silent auction. The Rev. W.M. Willaims is the pastor of Providence A.M.E.
