His Purple Highness reigned over the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Friday night, giving the ESSENCE audience nearly three hours of non-stop classics. 
 
Guests Trombone Shorty and British singer Lianne La Havas joined for a song, and the New Power Generation horn section keeping every song electrified. Add to that the Prince/ESSENCE/#YESWECODE Hackathon and you get the full Prince #PURPLESSENCE experience.

Aaron Jordan Jr. is on a mission to touch one million people’s lives through his book, “The Power Within, a Woman’s Worth: From Both Sexes.” A self-help relationship author, coach and motivational speaker, the book, he said, was written to enrich women and empower men in relationships.
 
With books on hand, Jordan will be in attendance at the TFC Media Studio at 2988 Old Austin Peay on Sunday (July 13th) from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. He will be available to answer questions and autograph copies of his book.

Shock jock fired over ‘racially charged’ posts
 
SiriusXM spokesman Friday announced the firing of a co-host of the “Opie & Anthony” radio show, citing “racially charged” and incendiary tweets about a confrontation in New York City earlier in the week, the Associated Press reports.
 
Shock jock Anthony Cumia was fired late Thursday, SiriusXM spokesman Patrick Reilly told the AP. He described Cumia’s Twitter rant as “abhorrent” to SiriusXM, the news site reports.

The music industry ebbs and flows affecting – directly and indirectly – the lives of succeeding generations through an eclectic mix of genres, including R&B, blues, hip-hop, jazz, gospel, country and more. Memphis’ contributions to the industry’s evolution reflect a noteworthy flow via hometown record labels such as Sun, Ardent, Hi, and Stax, just to name a few. 
 
During my childhood in the late fifties, I grew up listening to Otis Redding and the Bar-Kays of the Stax era. When Otis and nearly all of the Bar-Kays – with the exception of Ben Cauley – perished in a plane crash over Madison, Wis., I was tremendously impacted. It was a sad time in the music industry.

“Earth to Echo” (PG for action, peril and mild epithets) Kid-friendly sci-fi, reminiscent of E.T. (1982), about a trio of adolescents (Astro, Teo Halm and Reese Hartwig) who surreptitiously come to the aid of a homesick alien stranded on Earth. Supporting cast includes Ella Wahlestedt, Cassius Willis, Jason Gray-Stanford and Drake Kemper.
