HBCU Classic Weekend set to sport its growth

The 2nd Annual Memphis HBCU Classics takes place this weekend, building upon excitement that has been in the air for the past few weeks. This year's events have expanded into more than just a series of games and now include an HBCU mixer, a job fair, a college fair, and an ACT study session.

The Annual Memphis HBCU Classic was created to build awareness in the Memphis community of small Historically Black Colleges and Universities and to raise funds for Memphis-area students going to those schools.

This year's event has increased from four colleges to six, with more expected in the coming years.

"Everyone can look forward to some great HBCU basketball," says Corey Allen, founder and event organizer. "We have two top ranked NAIA teams this year, Xavier and Southern University of New Orleans, and we also have two head coaches who are from Memphis, Fred Summer of Concordia and Marquet Norfleet of Texas College."

Allen expects someday to grow the event large enough to require a larger venue, such as the FedExForum. The primary objective for 2012 is for the fans to come out and have a great time.

All the games are being held at Southwest Tennessee Community College located at 737 Union Ave. and will kick off Friday (Nov. 23) at 2 p.m. when Xavier takes on Concordia College. At 4 p.m, Texas College will face Harris-Stowe College, followed by Southern University of New Orleans and Wiley College at 6 p.m.

On Saturday (Nov. 24), the games continue at 2 p.m. when Xavier takes on Wiley College, and then at 4 p.m., Concordia College faces Texas College. The games wrap up with Harris-Stowe taking on Southern University of New Orleans. Tickets are $6 per day or $10 for both days. Kids ages 5 and under are free.

Also on Saturday night, it's the "Food Bank Bash," featuring Roxanne Shante and DJ Spinderella, at the Hard Rock Café at 315 Beale Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $15 and benefits the Memphis Food Bank!
