Rest assured ‘Heavy,’ we were inspired

I would be remised not to pay tribute to one of my favorite rappers, Heavy D., who passed away after collapsing outside of his apartment last week. At press time, no cause of death had been determined. An autopsy has been ruled inconclusive.

The good news is that a spokesman for the coroner has said no illegal drugs were found at his Beverly Hills home. A doctor, however, had prescribed Heavy D. a drug after the rapper, 44, experienced a cough.

I will never forget the last message Hev posted on his twitter account: “Be Inspired.” His hit song, “We Got Our Own Thang,” will always be one of my motivating tunes.

A private funeral is planned for Friday at Grace Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, N.Y., his hometown. The Rev. Al Sharpton is expected to speak, as well as Diddy, who was also a part of Uptown Records, where Hev began his career.

Meanwhile, the BET Network is planning a tribute to Heavy D. at the “Soul Train Awards,” which is scheduled to air on Nov. 27. It will include Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, Naughty by Nature and others.

If you’d like to pay tribute to the Overweight Lover, a website has been set up at www.rememberheavyd.com.
