Photography

Carlee McCullough, Esq.: How did you get started in photography?

Arick Elion: I first started as an illustrator. Because I wanted to be as well rounded in the arts as possible, I picked up a camera and began to expand my craft.

C.M.: When you’re on set what are you looking for when you’re capturing that perfect photo?

A.E.:
When I set up a shoot, I look for one unique moment that is going to make my work “pop.” Lighting, pose and wardrobe play a major part into making a regular photo into a piece of art.

C.M.: When shooting a client/model, how important is it to connect with the client/model?

A.E.: I think that it is very important to be able to connect with your subject. Within those few hours of shooting you’re building a relationship with that person and it’s going to show in your final work if that relationship was a good one or bad one.

C.M.: What elements go into a successful photography business?

A.E.: People skills, drive and talent. This could be the first time you’re shooting them. It’s something new to them and it’s your job to bring that supermodel out of them.

C.M.: What do you do to get inspired?

A.E.: I always listen to music when I look to get inspired. I would say the top artists on my playlist are Kanye West, Mute Math, Eminem, Mumford and Sons, and T.I.

C.M.: How would you describe your photographic style?

A.E.: I try to keep my style as close to NYC and international as possible. I believe that art should take the observer places, not remind them of where they are.

Graphic Artist

C.M.: What is a graphic artist?

A.E.: A graphic artist is one that can take a hand drawn concept and bring it to life inside the computer, be it 3D, 2D or in animation/film.

C.M.: What training is typically required to become a graphic artist?

A.E.: Like a doctor, it takes years to learn the tools you’ll need to better your craft. You have to learn the latest software and the latest market trends.

C.M.: What do you enjoy most about this field?

A.E.: I love the fact that I can make an image whatever I want it to be. There is no right or wrong answer. There’s only one rule and that’s “Make it look good.”

C.M.: What skills are most important for being a graphic artist?

A.E.: You must be a visionary. If you can’t see it, then it can’t be done.

C.M.: As an artist, have you been open to advice along the way? And do you think new artists should be open to advice?

A.E.: I have always had an open ear to what people have had to say about my work and the way that I make it. The only way anybody can grow in this field is through feedback. It’s up to the artist to decide if they want to evolve or stay in their own little box.
Video Artist

C.M.: What are the components to making a video?

A.E.: Knowing how to tell a story visually. Editing and timing play major roles in making a video.

C.M.: At the end of the day, who inspires Arick Elion? Who are your mentors in all of your fields of expertise?

A.E.: My inspiration comes from my kids and being able to show them that if you have a dream of being somebody great, it can happen. I want to become an icon in this field and I am more than willing to do the work. I look highly upon Hype Williams and Leonardo DaVinci. Both represent the best in my eyes and I want to become as big as or even bigger.
